Letters Presented to Surgeon General

Moritsugu, Gee, LerroNov. 30, 2005 - Personal letters from parents and the husband of people lost to eating disorders were hand-delivered by the EDC to the Surgeon General of the United States, Vice Admiral Richard Carmona. EDC Board Member Mary Gee and Executive Director Marc Lerro presented the letters during a meeting on women's mental health.

The meeting was organized by Dr. Wanda Jones, Deputy Secretary for Health (DHHS), and included Deputy Surgeon General Kenneth Moritsugu, and Kathryn Power, director of the Center for Mental Health Services (SAMHSA).

At the conclusion of the meeting, Gee called attention to the new Newsweek Magazine cover story on anorexia. The EDC repeatedly stressed the need for morbidity and mortality reporting by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Thanks to Retiring FAC Co-chair Mike Watt

Mike Watt at Lobby Day, 2005Eating disorder activist Mike Watt is stepping down as founder and co-chair of the Family & Friends Action Council (FAC). Mike and his wife Stephanie founded a nonprofit organization to fight eating disorders and to honor one of their daughters who died at the age of 14 in 1999. The Kristen Watt Foundation is a longtime member of the Eating Disorders Coalition, and Mike Watt has been extremely active as an advocate on Capitol Hill. We thank Mike for his many years of personal service to the FAC and look forward to working with him on other activities.

After a well-deserved vacation, Mike and the board of the Kristen Watt Foundation will begin work on their 2006 activities.
