Rep. Mary Bono (R-CA) to Sponsor
Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI)
Sept. 14 Press Conference
for Eating Disorders

U.S. Representative Mary Bono will sponsor the September 14 press conference planned by the Eating Disorders Coalition and the Academy for Eating Disorders. Rep. Bono's office confirmed last week that the California Republican will support the event and is likely to appear and speak on eating disorder issues. Also scheduled to appear is Rep. Patrick Kennedy, the Rhode Island Democrat and mental health advocate.

The press conference will call attention to the proposed IMPACT Act, which would provide federal grants for training health and education professionals on eating disorders and obesity. The press conference will also serve as the U.S. launch of the Worldwide Charter for Action on Eating Disorders, a treatment quality and education advocacy document developed by the Academy for Eating Disorders.

Copies of the charter have been mailed to all 535 members of Congress in order to familiarize them with the challenges facing people with eating disorders. The charter is also available for download by clicking here.

The press conference will start at 11:30 a.m. on the Cannon Terrace of the Cannon House Office Building at the corner of Independence Ave and New Jersey Ave SE. The terrace faces the U.S. Capitol and is one block from the Capitol South Metro Station.

The press conference is free and open to the public.

Space Still Available for EDC Lobby Day; Participants Coming from All Regions

Register online NOW.

It's not too late to register for the Sept. 14 EDC Lobby Day, but Dr. Jeanine Cogan cautions that appointments with specific lawmakers may not be possible.

"We're finalizing appointments for people who registered earlier," she says. "At this point, people who register will probably be networked into existing teams."

So far, EDC Lobby Day includes participants from California, Colorado, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington. Participants from Europe are also registered.

EDC Lobby Day Training and transportation are sponsored by the Renfrew Center Foundation.
