Good News: First Federal Report on ED Treatments

Some Treatments Prove Effective for Eating Disorders,
More Research Needed

For the first time, the federal government has published a report on the efficacy of various types of treatment for eating disorders. The report commissioned by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is available online now at http://www.ahrq.gov/clinic/tp/eatdistp.htm.

The information in the report is intended to help clinicians, employers, policymakers, and others make informed decisions about the provision of health care services.

An AHRQ press release on the report notes that "no medications are available that effectively treat patients suffering from anorexia nervosa, but a few behavioral therapies may help prevent a relapse and offer other limited benefits." The review also found evidence that several medications and behavioral therapies can help patients suffering from bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. READ MORE

In cooperation with Senator Pete Domenici (l.) and Rep. Patrick Kennedy (r.), the EDC will host a Congressional Briefing April 26 at the U.S. Capitol, focusing attention on the report and its significance for national public policy. READ MORE

Mental Health Parity Laws
