Congressional Briefing Attracts a Full House

April 14, 2004 - Eating disorder experts discussed treatment and costs before a packed Senate hearing room on April 14. The briefing sponsored by Senator Norm Coleman (R-MN) and Senator Mark Dayton (D-MN) attracted 78 people, including staffers from 20 house and senate offices, nonprofit groups, government officials, and members of the media.

B. Timothy Walsh, M.D., a graduate of Princeton University and of Harvard Medical School, joined the staff of Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in 1979. Since that time, he has been director of the Eating Disorders Research Unit at New York State Psychiatric Institute, and is currently the Ruane Professor of Pediatric Psychopharmacology in the Department of Psychiatry at the College of Physicians & Surgeons, Columbia University. Between June, 2002, and October, 2003, Dr. Walsh served as acting Chair of the Department and Interim Director of Psychiatric Institute.

In a number of research studies, Dr. Walsh and his group have examined biological abnormalities which may contribute to the development and perpetuation of disturbances in eating behavior, and have examined both psychological and pharmacological treatments for Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder. Dr. Walsh was Chair of the Eating Disorders Workgroup for DSM-IV, is a past president of the Academy for Eating Disorders, and is currently an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Eating Disorders and Chair of the Annenberg Sunnylands Commission on Eating Disorders.

MaryAnn Stump, RN, is vice president , strategic innovation and vice president State of Minnesota Health Plan, for Blue Cross. She works with employer and provider groups to identify, evaluate and diffuse strategic innovations in healthcare delivery design to ensure affordable, accessible, quality care.  A former cardiac critical care nurse, she was the lead architect of the Blue Cross Cardiac Centers of Excellence program, which earned several national best practice awards. Most recently, she was the lead Blue Cross executive in developing Minnesota's first community based residential treatment facility for eating disorders.  In addition to serving on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation National Advisory Board, she is a past president of Minnesota Healthcare Quality Professionals and is actively involved in statewide and national healthcare quality, patient safety, and consumer information related efforts.

Kitty Westin, mother of four, lost her oldest daughter, Anna, to anorexia. The Westin family had fought with their health insurance company for adequate treatment. After a settlement with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, the Westin family is now working to expand treatment options for families facing similar challenges.

Gail R. Schoenbach

Gail Schoenbach, an activist and person in recovery, will talk about her experiences in treatment. "I was binging and purging 10-20 times a day. When I first sought treatment, we paid out-of-pocket, $900 a week for an out-patient program." She said that when she relapsed, she checked herself into a six-week program in Florida, costing $50,000. "We took out a mortgage on our home." Now, Schoenbach is passionate about raising money and awareness for eating disorders treatment programs.

EDC Policy Director Jeanine Cogan, Ph.D.

Dr. Cogan is a founder of the Eating Disorders Coalition and served as its first executive director. She is a former American Psychological Association Congressional Fellow. In her current role as policy director, Dr. Cogan works to educate members of Congress and other federal policymakers about eating disorders. She joined the EDC in 2000.

 

EDC Senate Briefing Coordinator Lara Insel

Lara Insel is a 2002 graduate of Emory University. She is currently working toward a master's degree in social work from Smith College. For the December 2 briefing, Lara Insel developed a media list and marketed the event. For the April 14 Senate briefing, she developed the theme and content and recruited speakers and Senate sponsors.

 

EDC Executive Director Marc Lerro

Marc Lerro has worked in health education programs since 1981. He has also worked on local, state, and national political campaigns. He has directed programs on mental retardation, seizure disorders, cancer, HIV/AIDS, and services for the elderly. He joined the EDC in 2002.
