EDUCATING CONGRESS
The Eating Disorders Coalition educates members of Congress through various means. We meet with Members and staff directly, visiting every Congressional office typically once a year. We talk with them about the policies we are promoting and urge them to use their legislative authority to support policy solutions.
EDUCATING CONGRESS: OUR TALKING POINTS
There is clear rationale both in terms of data and trends that underscore the need for policies that will benefit those suffering from eating disorders, their families, researchers and clinicians. Below are "talking points" that explain why we need specific policy solutions.
Federal Response to Eliminate Eating Disorders Act (FREED Act) (S. 481) (H.R. 1448)
The Eating Disorders Awareness, Prevention, and Education Act
The IMPACT Act (Improved Nutrition and Physical Activity Act)
The EDC opposes Mandatory BMI testing in the schools
The EDC challenge Obesity Initiatives
Influencing the Implentation of the Affordability Care Act (ACA)
Mental Health Parity Bill PASSED
EDUCATING CONGRESS: THROUGH CONGRESSIONAL BRIEFINGS
Congressional briefings are presentations that we conduct throughout the year at the U.S. Capital in order to offer education about eating disorders. Working with sponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives or the U.S. Senate, we determine a theme and work with speakers to create a concise, informative program for members of Congress and their legislative aides. At briefings, elected officials and their aides ask questions, offer their perspectives, and get to know members of the eating disorders community.
